Francis is the illegitimate child of the King of Geatas and an Elven woman. Despite being an illegitimate child, he is raised in he castle and given the best in education and training. He wears the family crest, a Griffon, on the back of his cape.

At the age of 26, Francis witnesses a riot and decided to dedicate his life to others, becoming a knight. In fact, he becomes one of the five Legendary Knights of Astonishia. It is also around this time that Tree of Life in Ferarin suffers an unknown blight. As a the lives of the Elves are tied to the Tree of Life, many elves fall ill and begin to die. The Elven Queen Brimhild, desperate to ease the suffering of her people, expends so much of her powers to stop the blight that she ages drastically.

The one behind the Tree of Life's sickness was a dark magician, named Dryden. Together with the human sorcerer, tafter a three day battle the two manage to send Dryden to the depths of Hell and save Ferarin, where he decides to stay. This of course, was 100 years before the actual game takes place, so we only learn Francis' story through Lezail relating it to Lloyd.
